To get to the historic citadel of Machu
Picchu the visitor must travel to Aguas Calientes, the
nearest village to Machu Picchu (1,700 m above sea level). Trains,
as well as helicopters always leave their passengers at this small
village before they get to Machu Picchu.
The village is located 2 km from the Puerto Ruinas station and is
the place chosen by travelers to spend the night. Trains from Cusco
to Quillabamba stop here and there are several buses or vans, which
travel to Machu Picchu and Puente Ruinas. This
small town has a good number of hotels, hostels and restaurants
as well as discos with different prices.
A basic menu in Aguas Calientes is $ 3 while a good buffet is $ 20, which means that rates here are higher than in Cusco city. Similarly, hotels and hostels are more expensive here.
Hot Springs
Towards the east, 800 m away from Aguas Calientes, are the famous thermal waters, which give their name to this town. They are sulfur waters at different temperatures, springing from the rocky soil.
The pools in this place are conditioned to serve as thermal baths. The average temperature of these waters is between 38º and 46ºCelsius. Also, there are cloakrooms, restrooms and a small snack bar. Visits are allowed from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Entrance is US$ 3.
